About PlugCat

PlugCat is an independent information site. It is not a bank, not FDIC- or NCUA-insured, and not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any bank, credit union, budgeting app or data provider. Data is based on public provider lists and government records and may be out of date. Always confirm in the app before you subscribe.

How matching works

  1. We start from every active FDIC-insured bank (4,219) and federally insured credit union (4,299).
  2. We compare names against Plaid’s public US coverage list (generated 2026-09-18). Plaid’s list has no routing numbers or websites, so matching is by name, using state tags like “(IN)” when Plaid includes them.
  3. A match needs name + state, or a name no other institution shares, or a brand-name mapping we checked by hand (e.g. JPMorgan Chase Bank → “Chase”). A possible match means the name is shared by several institutions.
  4. App status is inferred from the providers each app says it uses in its own help docs. Plaid-only apps (Rocket Money, Lunch Money) “likely work” where Plaid lists the bank; multi-provider apps may connect even when Plaid doesn’t.

Current results: banks 2,833 match / 472 possible / 914 unknown; credit unions 2,309 match / 128 possible / 1,862 unknown.

What we don’t know (yet)

Reliability. We don’t publish success rates because no provider makes them public. We will show visitor “worked / broke” reports with dates once they’re collected. We don’t use Monarch’s dashboard data; we link to it.

Credit-union names are built from NCUA’s short names plus charter type (e.g. “PENTAGON” + federal charter → “Pentagon Federal Credit Union”).
